All the NJ Connections in ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’

Andy Sachs becomes the new features editor of Runway magazine in the first full trailer for The Devil Wears Prada 2.

And to think, she once couldn’t spell “Gabbana.”

First, she tries to get Miranda Priestly to remember who she even is — or was. Still, it must be worth it. Because, as Miranda says … “Everybody wants this.”

That’s the tagline for the eagerly anticipated sequel to the hit 2006 movie starring New Jersey Oscar winners Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep.

The trailer, which debuted during the Grammys Sunday night, is now rounding 6.5 million views on YouTube and follows a first-look teaser released in November.

While the Runway offices are in New York, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is filled to the brim with New Jersey talent. The Jersey trifecta of Hathaway (Millburn), Streep (Bernardsville via Basking Ridge and Summit) and screenwriter-producer Aline Brosh McKenna (Demarest and Montvale) reunited for the 20th Century Studios film, in theaters May 1—just in time for the Met Gala.

Original Devil Wears Prada director, Oscar winner David Frankel, joins them for the next chapter, which sees Streep’s Miranda steer Runway as the publication faces the pitfalls of the flagging magazine industry. Her reunion with Hathaway’s Andy, a former assistant, brings another reunion with another former assistant, Emily Charlton, played by Emily Blunt, who also returns from the original cast. Emily still works in the fashion industry, but is no longer at Miranda’s beck and call, having moved significantly up the ladder after leaving Runway. Stanley Tucci is also back as Nigel Kipling, who was the magazine’s art director in the first film, when he became a savvy ally to the struggling Andy.

Runway. It’s not just a magazine. It’s a global icon,” Nigel says in the trailer’s voiceover. “A winding road that brings us back together again.”

When Andy makes her grand entrance at the magazine 20 years later, he has a zinger at the ready: “Well look what T.J. Maxx dragged in!”

“Who is this?” Miranda asks. “Do you know her? Do I know her?”

Emily tells Andy that she seems different than she did in their days as assistants.

“You’ve changed,” she says. “You have. You’re much more confident. Kept those eyebrows though, didn’t you?”

Newcomer Helen J. Shen, who stars in the Tony-winning musical Maybe Happy Ending, is also part of the film’s Jersey factor. Like Streep, Shen, 26, grew up in Basking Ridge. The Ridge High School alum is joined by fellow DWP newbies Simone Ashley, B.J. Novak, Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux, Caleb Hearon, Conrad Ricamora and Pauline Chalamet in the cast.

Fans of the first movie will also recognize Tracie Thoms and Tibor Feldman returning as Lily and Irv, while Australian actor Patrick Brammall plays Andy’s love interest and Oscar winner Kenneth Branagh plays Miranda’s husband.

When the movie filmed on the streets of Manhattan last year, Hathaway and Streep’s heavily photographed scenes were like their own runway shows that offered a preview of the film’s fashions and plot. The production also came to New Jersey for one day in September when The Devil Wears Prada 2 filmed at Newark Liberty International Airport, the state Economic Development Authority confirms.

As we know, Miranda’s world of high fashion means plenty of jet-setting to Europe. The first movie involved a fateful, impossibly glamorous trip to Paris Fashion Week. Besides New York and New Jersey, The Devil Wears Prada 2 filmed in Milan and Lake Como, Italy.

The first Devil Wears Prada ends with Andy taking a stand by leaving Miranda and the fashion world to pursue a reporter job at a New York newspaper. But her journalism career lands her right back with the boss she once feared—the uncompromising publishing doyenne who peppered her with demanding phone calls on her time off and told her she had no fashion sense.

The film’s trailer, set to Madonna’s “Vogue,” gives a nod to the original movie’s inspiration. Brosh McKenna’s script was an adaptation of the 2003 novel of the same name by Lauren Weisberger, who once worked as an assistant to Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, a job Wintour held until last year (now she’s global chief content officer and artistic director at Condé Nast).

Weisberger also wrote the 2013 sequel book Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns, and the third book in the series, When Life Gives You Lululemons, (2018), a spinoff about Emily’s life.

The Devil Wears Prada, which hit theaters almost 20 years ago, grossed more than $326 million worldwide.
